Linguist model wins Miss Universe Thailand

Asian beauties are taking every inch the contender to beat in the 66th edition of Miss Universe happening later this year.

This after, 25 year old Mareeya Poonlertlarp, half-Thai, half-Swedish model bagged the Miss Universe Thailand 2017 in a glittering production at Siam Paragon Hall last 29 July. She will represent Thailand in the upcoming Miss Universe 2017.

Mareeya, towering at 5’9, holds a postgraduate in Marketing from the Stockholm Business School, won Bt1 million in cash, a diamond tiara, a trophy and a brand new car.

She speaks four languages fluently – Thai, Swedish, English and Mandarin and started modeling at the age of 13.

“I want to do good for the society at large and the status of Miss Universe Thailand allows me to follow my passion efficiently. This beauty stage is powerful to speak and to do something for the society. The rights of women in Thailand, their education and premature pregnancy of teenagers are the three key issues I want to draw people’s attention,” Mareeya said.
Her experiences as a model helped her boost her confidence on stage.

“Being a model allows me to know my best camera angle for the natural and best look and how to walk or stand with good posture. I joined this contest with full confidence and I truly believe that I fit in with this beauty pageant. My family members and friends all support me, she furthered.

Supaporn Litiphruek was her first Runner Up and awarded Bt500,000 in cash while Suraphuen Artkongharn, Ratchanok Nawaset and Paweensuda Du-uen were joint second Runners Up and received Bt150,000 each.

In 2016, Chalita Suansane represented Thailand in the 65th Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines and made it to the Top 13 after earning the highest fan votes worldwide but ended up only in the Top 6, the highest placement for Thailand in 28 years. In 1998, Porntip Nakhirankanok won Miss Universe for Thailand.

Venezuela might not join Miss Universe 2017

Despite being second to the United States of America with 8 Miss Universe winners – Venezuela is reportedly not keen in sending its representative in the 66th edition of Miss Universe mainly because of the financial crisis the South American nation is experiencing since.

TVyNovelas (a monthly Mexican magazine) posted on its website that Miss Venezuela 2016-2017 Keysi Sayago may not compete in the next Miss Universe since Miss Venezuela Organization thru Osmel Sousa could not provide the franchise payment to Miss Universe Organization.

Though written in Spanish but was translated in English by other pageant websites, the article says, “For the first time since the 1952 World Beauty Fair began, Venezuela may not send a representative to it. Although it is no secret that the country is going through a difficult social political situation, the Miss Venezuela contest is a tradition of so strong a roots in national culture, that (although with work), the 2017 edition is already being prepared. In fact, Keysi Sayago, the current Miss Venezuela and to represent the country in Miss Universe 2017, was selected on October 6 last year and has since been preparing for international competition. The big problem is that so far, the Miss Venezuela Organization has not been able to pay the annual franchise fee required by the Miss Universe Organization to accept its candidate.”

The report added that the said figure changes by country and it is known that in the case of Venezuela it will cost them around US$100,000 annually. However, there is an exception for not paying the annuity.

“When the candidate of a country wins the crown, the next year does not have to pay. That is why in the last 8 years the company that runs Osmel has saved the negligible amount of 300 thousand dollars. This is because Venezuela won the editions of the years 2008, 2009 and 2013,” the report added.

But the reigning Miss Venezuela still hopes that the money will still be collected and her dreams of representing her country in the Miss Universe can still be fulfilled. In previous years, Venezuela has the same incident which had a happy ending. In 2003, Mariangel Ruiz was informed that she won’t be joining the international pageant because of failure to pay the annuity but she didn’t give up and continued her training. She managed to raise the US$70,000 and was able to join the pageant.

But despite the financial difficulties Venezuela is facing, Sayago is still hopeful that she will be able to join this year’s Miss Universe pageant. In 2016, Miss Venezuela Mariam Habach failed to make a cut in the semis amid the positive reviews of her looks and performance and Miss France Iris Mittenaere emerged victorious.

Man of the World 2017 finals to be held in Manila

With the institution of several beauty pageants, both for women and men, a newest addition to the list is “Man of the World”. The birth of this international male pageant is said to change the landscape and consciousness at male pageantry.

Man of the World, the brainchild of Prime Event Productions Philippines Foundation, Inc. [PEPPS], promises an amalgamation of the traditional and modern concepts to fortify and give a new face of the male pageantry.

PEPPS with its wide experience of organizing and producing world-class male pageants in the Philippines gave birth to Misters of Filipinas, considered the biggest and highly-esteemed male pageant in the country has produced two [2] international winners Mister International and Manhunt International including numbers of runners up from several international male pageants.

Man of the World’s motto of “Celebrating Masculinity with Responsibility” will converge around fifty [50] men from different countries around the globe and bring together the new advocacy of the pageant with emphasis on promoting tourism and education.

In line with this, PEPPS inks partnership with the Department of Tourism [DOT] and the Department of Education [DepEd].

Something new is expected from “Man of the World” as it offers new twists in the male pageantry. There will be two [2] fast-track events: Talent of the World and World’s Choice. On its Social Media contest, the organizer will introduce “Web Series” where pageant fans and supporters around the world can follow their favorite candidate. The candidate’s journey leading to the pageant finals will be properly documented in a web series which can be viewed thru the official fan page of Man of the World.

Favorably, the Philippines will primarily benefit from this pageant as it highlights the best of the Philippine tourism. According to PEPPS, beach wear photo and video shoot will be held in Manjuyod Sand Bar in Negros Oriental, dubbed as the Maldives of the Philippines. Candidates are also expected to visit various schools in the country to promote the pageant thrust. Additionally, the country’s finest beaches will serve as the backdrop during the Man of the World Beah Wear Competition.

Meanwhile, Christopher “Chriz” Comicho Dulagan, a police inspector from the Cordilleras will represent the Philippines in the first edition of Man of the World 2017.

Chriz won the title during Misters of Filipinas 2016 finals last 18 September. “I’m just thankful sa Miss Grand International for getting me and Nicole Cordoves…I’m sure it would be a wonderfull experience,” said Lim whose hosting skills has been tested in four editions of Binibining Pilipinas.

Lim, aside from being an actor, is also a singer, musician and painter. Recently, he launched his first solo exhibit.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Durado Clenci will represent the Philippines in this year’s Miss Grand International.

Clenci, 26 is half Romanian and half Filipino but grew up In Australia. She represented Mandaue, City Cebu during the pageant’s final in April. Her second shot at the Binibining Pilipinas is a charm. In 2011, she took a slot in the 15 semi-finalists with her sister Sarah.

During the Q & A in this year’s Binibining Pilipinas coronation night, Clenci was asked, “If you are caught in a heavy traffic, terribly frustrating traffic, what are the best ways to make your time productive?”

“If I’m caught in traffic, what I usually do is read and sleep, ‘coz time is of an essence so I feel like when you’re stuck in traffic, you really need to make use of your time. So, I read or sleep or talk on the phone with a loved one.”

Miss World Philippines implements 8 changes

As the international pageant season is about to begin, Miss World Organization [MWO] announced new changes in the competition with the introduction of the Head to Head Challenge events which will take place between October 21 and November 15 in different locations visited by the contestants during the Miss World 2015 Festival.

According to MWO, 20 groups of 6 countries will go to head-to-head for a place in the Top 40 Round (the number of countries in each group may be adjusted according to the final number of candidates) and the winner of each challenge will automatically qualify for the Miss World Top 40 Round.

The Challenge – Online Live Broadcast is another new segment to look forward to. The 6 Nations in each group will make their opening remarks followed by a presentation of themselves. This can be a combination of live presentation and the pre-recorded VT with a maximum time of 2 minutes.

After the presentations, contestants will answer questions from the presenter and online community and this procedure will be part of a Group discussion that will last for about 8 minutes. Lastly, each candidate will answer the question of the day about 30-45 seconds for each country to answer.

But how they will be judged? The public will be asked to choose the winner of each Group thru a free vote. The presenter will open the vote to the public after the opening presentations and voting will remain open until the start of the next challenge event when the winner of the previous Head To Head Challenge will be announced.

The Group will be decided with a live draw and which countries will go into which groups.

How they would know when their representative is competing? Schedule of the exact dates and time of each Challenge event will be issued after the Miss World Group draw takes place.

Will it affect the placement in the Miss World final? MWO said there will be Top 40 which will comprise the following: 20 Head To Head Challenge winners; 5 Fast-Track Event’s winners; and 15 Judges choices.

It added, “if a contestant does not win her Head To Head Challenge, she still has a chance to be in the Top 40 by winning a fast-track or though judges selection. This means that every country will now have their opportunity to be in the spotlight during the Miss World Festival. The online “daily” challenge show will be offered, via MW website, media partners and social media. All voting is free Via Miss World App or Facebook (or a FREE equivalent in a country cannot download the app or does not have Facebook).” [Source: www.missworld.com]

In the Philippines, nobody see it coming! But changes do really come for a reason. With the new franchise owner of Miss World Philippines - from Cory Quirino to talent manager Arnold Vegafria, a new setting is ready to embark with the search for a new queen to best represent the Philippines in the 2017 edition of Miss World.

In January this year, pageant fanatics were surprised when Quirino eventually gave up the Miss World franchise leaving the pageant enthusiasts speculating as to what’s going to happen with the Miss World Philippines since the country made a remarkable streak in the 66 year old worldwide renowned beauty pageant.

First major changes, MWP has its new national director in the person of Vegafria of ALV talent Circuit and general manager Bessie Besana, an up-and-coming fashion designer and experienced pageant trainer from Aces & Queens beauty camp. Vegafria was offered by MWO Chairperson Julia Morley when the two met in Beverly Hills, California.

Next stop, MWP has a bigger and better venue as it will have its finals at SM Mall of Asia Arena on 3 September 2017; a new crown is at stake as Miss World 2013 Megan Young collaborates with renowned jeweler to create a new MWP crown. According to the organizer, it will be sleeker and more elegant in design and will complement the color motif [blue and silver] of the MW; luckily, this year’s candidates will surely make the best way out to win one of the three [3] coveted titles including Miss World Philippines while Reina Hispanoamericana Filipinas, Miss Multinational and Miss Eco Philippines will have its inauguration crown.

A new competition format is also about to unfold. It will most likely replicate the MW format following the fast-track events and this includes: Brand Fashion Show where the Top Model Challenged will be showcased, Charity Gala night where Talent Competition will be held, Sports Challenge where candidates will be divided into three [3] teams, Beach Beauty Challenge and the Charity Day.

Also part of the major changes in format is the new theme song of the Miss World Philippines, written and performed by R&B artists Jay-R and Kris Lawrence where the press and other invited guests had the chance to listen to the new theme song and samples were given away during the launched recently.

The new official website of MWP is www.missworldphilippines.org and the new official hashtag is #msworldphil while the twitter account is MsWorldPhil.

It also announced the new charity beneficiary of the MWP, the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Sta. Cruz, Manila. According to Vegafria, he is hoping that through their efforts, they will be able to renovate and build better wards (particularly for cancer patients and childre0 to provide better medical attention to those in need.

Truly, Miss World and Miss World Philippines are exciting as other international renowned pageants as it reinvent and employ new practices and format.

City of Manila's representative Karen Ibasco was crowned as the new Miss Philippines Earth on Saturday, July 15, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Ibasco will compete for the Miss Earth pageant in November in MOA Arena.

Ibasco, 26 is a medical physicist who teaches at University of Santo Tomas. She bested 39 other aspirants.

During the final Q&A, the five finalists were asked the same question: "The government's slogan is, change is coming. What change do you wanna see in terms of environmental policies in the country?"

"In terms of environmental policies, everyone is experiencing climate change, the whole world is experiencing climate change. From those categories, the judges determined the Top 10 semi-finalists who were casually interviewed by host Robi Domingo using several hashtags about the environment.

First ever Miss Scuba Philippines, launched in Belmont Hotel

Philippines has never run out of beautiful ladies. Beauty that captivates not only the locals but also the foreign eyes.  This is the reason why Philippine representatives always, if not, clinched the title in any international beauty pageants.

With the beautiful Filipinas around, no wonder why beauty pageants are pumping ups the country.  One, so to speak is Miss Scuba Philippines, a new pageant that focuses on the preservation of the sea, thus, it is open ONLY to all girls who love and will love the sea and the life in it.

(From L-R: Belmont Hotel's Marketing people, Cindy Madduma, Athena Katriz, and Kristine Makizz Tablazon)
Miss Scuba Philippines or MSP is now the youngest nationwide pageant in the country, handled by a beauty queen herself, Miss Scuba International 2015 Cindy Madduma.

According to Cindy, the Philippines’ National Director, she wants to make more Filipinos aware of the danger of throwing trash in the sea, thus, bringing  the said pageant in the country will help her relay its message to the public.

Launched last July 12, 2017 at the new and beautiful Belmont Hotel near NAIA terminal, the pageant is distinct from other existing pageants  because it only focuses in the preservation of the sea, though the segments are very much alike.

According to Cindy, her pageant will also give hope to those aspiring beauty queens who are already 28 years old, because their age requirement is pegged between 18 and 28 years old.

However, Cindy said they will be stricter when it comes to status because they only want single and never been married and of course, never been engaged in any scandalous pose of any men’s magazine.

The Crown
Winner will represent the Philippines in 2017 Miss Scuba International to be held in Malaysia.

For more information about the pageant, aspiring candidates can leave a message directly to their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/missscubaphilippines
